Henry One Month (one month late)

Dear Henry,

Age: one month
one elephant for one month

Size: At one month you weighed 8 pounds and 3 ounces - almost 2 pounds heavier than at birth! You had your one month appointment about 3-4 days after you turned one month, so you probably weighed right at 8 pounds then. You were 20 inches still, or 20.5 (wow I don't remember already) so just getting fatter!

Milestones: You rolled over!!

At one week old we looked at the crib monitor from our phones and from your back you had managed to get on your side and your right arm was all the way over your left (which was still stuck). From the angle of the picture, you looked like you rolled over but we knew you didn't. Once we started using swaddles instead of sleep sacks you started squiggling around in your crib and we don't know how since you are pretty tightly swaddled.

What a wiggle worm!

Family and Friends: A lot of our friends brought us meals (which definitely contributed to the fact that I weigh the same as when I left the hospital). You have loved meeting them all, especially Clara!

Your Aunt Adva and Uncle Jason surprised us and visited during their short break for their board exams. They checked your reflexes before they even hugged or held you, and of course you passed with flying colors.

Your Daddy could just hold you while you're sleeping and not put you down, and in fact he sometimes holds you in the middle of the night in the lazy boy instead of putting you in the crib. We gotta soak up those cuddles because pretty soon you'll be too big for them.

One morning I woke up after I had fallen asleep with you in my arms, and looked over and you were in the crib with a big blanket on you.
I FREAKED out that someone had done that, and Daddy was sitting gin the office (the next room over) watching the monitor constantly to make sure you were okay. But we had a talk and I explained to him very nicely that it was not okay and that we have wearable blankets. Daddy said he thought you liked the heavy pressure so I showed him some swaddles that add a little weight.

Well, I went to get a pedicure when you were a few weeks old and Daddy watched you. I missed you so I asked him to send me a picture. He sent a picture of a pile of blankets and said "he's somewhere under there". Then of course he didn't pick up when I called so I called Granny Lolly and made her go check on you. Before she got there Daddy texted me that he was joking. NOT funny, Daddy!

Foods: You get breast milk only, either from the boob or the bottle. You got your bottle on day 2 because you were in the NICU (Thank you Aunt Dana and baby Leah for sharing your milk for Henry's first bottle). I made sure to give you the bottle and not anybody else so that you would take one from me. I've heard about babies taking bottles from anybody but their mother (they smell her and want the boob) so I wanted to nip it in the bud before it started.  You got a pacifier on day 2. It's your best friend. We call it your "motzi" because Motzetz is Pacifier in Hebrew. Parents who choose to not give their kids motzis are sadists. Seriously! I've come to learn that nipple confusion is basically a myth. So many of my friends gave a motzi early on and their babies still breastfeed like champs. In fact, I have a friend who didn't give her baby one and then the baby didn't take a paci ever!
You only took the soothie or gumdrop pacis at the beginning but I transitioned you to the orthodontic kind, and your favorite motzi is the mam, followed by the avent. I like that the event comes with a little cover so I keep that one in my diaper bag as our extra, so it doesn't collect diaper bag dust.

At about 1-2 weeks you stopped latching on immediately (I called it "the chomp) and started fussing a bit at the nipple, but a few phone calls with Aunt Jaren and Aunt Sarah, and Granny Lolly, straightened that our right away.

Schedule: In the NICU you were put on an ever 3 hour schedule from day 1, so we kept it at first. At your 1 week check up (you were 8 days old) you had regained all your birth weight plus an ounce, so the doctor told us we didn't have to wake you up in the middle of the night anymore. That sort of ruined the schedule because now you were waking up at different hours. After tweaking it quite a bit I put you on a 2.5 hour schedule, which sounds like a step back from 3 hours, but it ensured you got more food during the day and needed less at night, so you would sleep longer stretches.

You are very sweet when you sleep. At first you didn't like the swaddle and you slept so soundly that we just used sleep sacks (wearable blankets) but when you became more alert we started swaddling you and it completely relaxes you now.

We did your newborn pictures at 9 days and you were already so much more alert that they were a pain in the butt! You fussed the whole time instead of just sleeping for those precious sleeping pictures. We did manage a few good ones and my absolute favorite (and yours) is this one of Mickey, which I declare will be your favorite thing ever.

Swaddled, you are a good sleeper. You also fall asleep nursing sometimes, and make really cute faces and smiles. I also love when you fall asleep with your paci and it falls out, and your mouth stays open. Jaren titled the open mouthed picture "Insert boob here".

Me and you:
I got to show you off when I took you to Sunday School for your very first non doctor appointment outing on your 4 week birthday. I let my students hold you after they washed their hands. I loved showing you off!
Call me an evil mama, but some of my favorite pictures are these few of you crying.

I tried so hard to get these of you, and as soon as we took out your motzi and unswaddled you, the pictures above happened.

I can't believe in a few months you'll be posing in the lazy boy with 12 little elephants (which means mommy needs to do some shopping, don't tell Daddy!)

I love you more than the world, baby boy!

Mom Fail Friday

I almost didn't have a mom fail this week! Are you surprised? I mean I know I'm practically perfect in every way (Mary Poppins reference), so a once a week fail is a high expectation. But wouldn't you know, Shabbat brought us one! My friend gave Henry a kippa as a present and of course, the night he's going to his evey first service ever, I can't find it!! And I am pretty anal about putting things in place etc. So sad. Mom fail for this kipa-less bebe. At least he has a cute bib!

Which happens to match his girlfriend's Leah's bib!

Shabbat shalom y'all! Next time he'll have the kippa.

Mom fail Friday - two days late

I'm starting a segment called mom fail Friday. Except it's Sunday. By mom fail Sunday doesn't sound good so there it is.

First fail happened about a month ago during a huge consignment sale Vegas has 4 times a year. I had run a few errands with my dad (car shop for each of our cars), and then stopped at a baby store to feed Henry. I got to the consignment sale all late and disheveled (basically the description of any new mom), and realized after alllll that (I didn't give all the details), I forgot the stroller! Absolutely no way I can carry Henry around in the carseat at a warehouse sized sale. Fail. Had to drive over 30 minutes home empty handed.

Mom fail 2 happened today. Had lunch after Sunday school and fed Henry at the restaurant. Had to run errands for a situation we had with the business, and I'm in the middle of a store at a shopping center and realized my bra isn't hooked back up!!! Whoops!

And because what's a blogpost without pictures, here are two for your enjoyment.

Henry Two months

Dear Henry,

Age: You are two months and four days (and also 9 weeks today!). Two elephants for two months. Three if you count Henry. I have a one month picture too that I never posted, and everything else in drafts. I guess mommy-hood does take over!

Size: You weigh about 10 pounds. I go to a mommy group every Wednesday led by a lactation consultant and they have a free baby weigh station, on your two month birthday you weighed 9 pounds and 14 ounces. You were about 22 inches. One day I decided to get out your big boy stroller seat.
(as opposed to your bassinet or carseat)
(in your bassinet with one of your many girlfriends, Kinsley)
Aren't those the coolest glasses?

Well, I adjusted the straps etc to fit you. And guess what? The next day I had to adjust them again. Growing growing growing! Everyone "warns" you that it happens so fast but I absolutely love seeing you grow and learn and become you.

Just look at your chubby wrists!

Milestones: You started rolling from your tummy to your back at about a month. I posted a video on fb because people wouldn't believe it otherwise. You don't do it every day, but you do it very consistently. You also hold your head up VERY well during tummy time which you are not the biggest fan of. You have very recently started grabbing fabrics like my shirt or a blankie, so I took out a lovey giraffe that we named "Jilly" and hope you'll play with it since it rattles etc. You swat at toys on your playmate and sometimes fall asleep, and you alsop lay with big board books.
You make eye contact and track, and you do have a social smile, I think. These pictures definitely show it but I am not sure if it is 100% intentional yet. You tend to smile more in the morning, and you love your Granny Lolly and smile at her a lot.
(guess who swaddled you the night before this picture was taken?)

I can't wait until I am 100% certain that it's an intentional smile because you love seeing us as much as we love seeing you.

You've recently discovered your tongue and we can see you sticking it out and playing with it. At first we thought you wanted your paci but you stay super calm so we think you're just playing around.

Family: You absolutely love your Granny Lolly. We have an app called smallnest that syncs so Granny Lolly and Daddy each have it on their phones - we can track your eating, sleeping, diapers, and much more. Well, Granny Lolly checks it every morning when she knows you're probably up and feeding (you wake up between 6-7) and she usually comes to spend time with you right then and you LOVE it. You're definitely a morning baby which isn't my favorite because I'm not a morning person, but I've adjusted and love spending that time with you, and love spending that time watching you and Granny Lolly together while I pump.
You and granny lolly before one of our walks:
Twins!!

And taking a rest together:

You have a very special bond with her and Saba, who we have started calling "sababa" (which means "cool" in Hebrew). One of my favorite pictures is when they were both over at our house and didn't realize it but they were both holding one of your hands while you played.
You also get along with the dogs. At first they kind of ignored you and now they sort of sniff and protect you. You got to meet Maya before she died and she loved you so much. This is one of my favorite pictures:
You love Odge and Lee and Lee tends to protect you as we thought he would.  The other day Sababa asked if he could be with you a bit (while I did some sewing) and they dogs came and cuddled with you two.

Your favorite thing to do with your daddy is cuddle. Daddy could just watch you sleep and for a long time just held you in his arms and wouldn't let go. When you were really little and not sleeping through the night he would go in after I fed you and just hold you until the next time. You still sometimes take naps together and it melts my heart.

Foods: You are basically a breastfed baby and take a bottle like a champ from anybody including me, which I hear is rare. We gave you formula for about 3 nights (2 ounces mixed with my breast milk) because I went out of town for a weekend for Caroline's wedding, and even though I left several pounds of breast milk, I wanted to make sure you didn't have a formula reaction JUST IN CASE. You ended up not needing it and we had plenty left over but I wanted to be sure. You've developed a bad case of spit up, but it doesn't seem to bother you and you are gaining weight and happy, so I don't think it's reflux. I don't know yet when I will introduce solids and what your first food will be. It will be sometime between 4-6 months and I haven't decided if I want your first food to be rice cereal or oatmeal, or if I want it to be a fruit or vegetable.

Schedule: At 5 weeks you went through a hell of a growth spot, and then the day it was over you started sleeping 6 hours at night! It was a little inconsistent for a week, and then became consistent. At 7 weeks your daddy was supposed to bring you a bottle of pumped milk at 6 am when you woke up and I was just too tired to handle it. Instead he misunderstood and put your paci in your mouth. Well what do you know you slept 8 hours! Now you sleep an average of 7 hours a night. I was feeding you every 2.5 hours and just increased it to 3. We wake you up with a diaper change and then feed you immediately. THen you play for an hour, and sleep for an hour. Obviously roughly speaking. Well, now you're awake for an hour and a half since I increased it to 3. I got "Joking" criticism about waking you up to feed - people said you look so peaceful so why would I wake you? Well, I know that you loved waking up NOT starving and very calm to eat a meal, and that it helped you sleep through the night so young, so I'm so glad this worked for us. When we have to go off schedule you are a mess. Luckily, I made sure super young that you would sleep anywhere and through noise etc. You sleep in your crib at night swaddled, and anywhere else during the day. You love the mamaroo as does everyone else that walks in the door, and if daddy is home you will for sure sleep on his chest or in his arms.

Me and you: I love every ounce of you more than anything. I really was meant to be your mommy and have never loved doing anything as much as this. You are the sweetest, easiest baby. You only cry if you need something like your pacifier. We put you on your schedule right away and have done great with each adjustment. Because of this you hardly ever cry to tell me you are hungry, since we do it preemptively, unless you are having a growth spurt (you had one at 5 and 8 weeks). I love sewing clothes for you and monograming everything with your name on it. You look exactly like I did as a baby, but I think you have Daddy's eyebrows, and a combination of his nose and mine.
You're on the left and I'm on the right.

Henry Norton Maddox, I can't wait to see how much you've grown by 3 months and on and on until forever.

Love, Mommy
